Students are encouraged to step into the shoes of various community members to explore possible past events reflected in this story, making connections with their own history. The story serves as a reminder that people in our past stood up for the ideals held by society. Sacrifices were made to give us the peace and freedom we experience today. Links are given to the wider historical context of Aotearoa New Zealand and to local community contexts. 

This unit is suitable for all levels of the primary and junior secondary curriculum. It is easily adapted to suit the needs within Levels 3, 4 and 5 of Curriculum. The context and content are driven by the interests of the age group of the ākonga and the community of learners.
